North Dighton

NORTH DIGHTON- Carlos P. Alves, 80, of North Dighton, passed away suddenly surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his family. He was the dear husband of the late M. Antonieta (Cordeiro) Alves, who passed away in 2015.

Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, he was one of three children born to the late Danglares and Maria (Pavao) Alves. Carlos spent his school years in the Azores as a talented and avid soccer player. He met Antonieta through his sister and her brother, becoming childhood sweethearts at the age of 12. When his father took the opportunity to immigrate to Ontario, Canada, Carlos and Antonieta kept in touch through love letters. They married in 1962 and began their life together in Fall River, Massachusetts. Carlos and Antonieta were married for 53 years until her passing. The joy of their lives was their one and only daughter, Dena.

Carlos was lucky enough to have a second chance at love with his loving partner Jan, who he spent 7 happy years with.

He was a skilled machinist by trade who made his antiquated machines “purr” at Independent Nail for 45 years and 1 day before retiring.

In his spare time, Carlos spent many hours caring for his yard, and his home. Each spring he was proud to plant a vegetable garden that he would later harvest for his family and share with friends and neighbors. He loved his home in North Dighton that provided the opportunity to enjoy watching the birds and woodland animals. He was a skilled woodcutter who carefully selected trees to provide warmth and comfort for his family through use of a wood burning stove. Over the years his skills became so honed that he was sought out for his expertise by friends, family and community.

Carlos was an avid sports fan, especially rooting for the Boston Bruins in ice hockey and the Portugal National Soccer Team during the World Cup. His favorite days were spent in his pool teaching his grandchildren to swim, swimming in the ocean, and enjoying a family bonfire at the Goosewing beach. Above all, Carlos was most happy when he was making memories with his dear family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he was so proud of.

Carlos is survived by his loving life partner, Janet Bruce of North Dighton; his cherished daughter, Dena Alves-Grota and her partner Richard Grim of Forestdale, MA; his siblings: Natalia Cusworth and her husband Allan; Victor Alves and his wife Trudi, all of Vancouver, BC; his former son-in-law Steven Grota of Rehoboth; his grandchildren: Steven A. Grota, II and his wife Kathleen of North Dighton, Angela Antonelli and her husband Michael of Foxboro, Holly Grota of San Diego CA; Ann LaShay Bruce, of N. Dighton, who he loved and considered a granddaughter; his great-grandchildren: Jackson and Caleb Grota and Gianna Antonelli; and also numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Carlos’s funeral with visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, 4:30 PM-6:30 PM PM at the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) in Taunton.  A Memorial Service will be held in the funeral home immediately following the visitation at 6:30 PM.
