Erna A. (Woelfle) Vaz, 93, passed away on the afternoon of Friday, July 5, 2024 in Raynham, MA surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of her children. Formerly of Taunton, she was the loving wife to the late Antonio C. “Tony” Vaz. She was also predeceased by her parents, Ludwig and Mathilde (Maier) Woelfle, as well as her beloved siblings, sister Mathilda Scherbak and brother Ludwig Woelfle.
Born in Dillingen, Germany, it was there that she met her future husband, Tony, while he was stationed there with the United States Army. Theirs was an incredible love story and they enjoyed 65 wonderful years of marriage prior to his passing in 2019. Erna was a woman of incredible faith and an active member with several parishes throughout her life, most recently at St. Ann Church in Raynham and St. Nicholas of Myra Church in North Dighton prior to that. She also served as a eucharistic minister for several years. She spent the majority of her career raising her four children and working as a homemaker for her family, something she took great pride in.
In later years, she worked part-time as a produce clerk for Trucchi’s Supermarket and spent her spare time cooking, baking and gardening. She loved flowers and could make anything grow. Above all, she treasured the time spent and memories made with her family, welcoming all with a warm smile, a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.
To cherish her memory, Erna leaves behind a daughter, Joanne Hooley of Somerset, and three sons, Francis Vaz of Berkley, Robert Vaz of Taunton, and Michael Vaz of Berkley, along with their spouses, Robert Hooley, Patricia Vaz, Amy Vaz, and Pamela Vaz. She was the beloved grandmother of Geoffrey Langfield and his wife Brandie and Eric Langfield and wife Elizabeth; Jason Vaz and his wife Christine and Corey Vaz; Nicholas Vaz and his wife Christine and Cara Pari and her husband Al; Matthew, Grace, and Benjamin Vaz, as well as 9 great-grandchildren: Olivia, Paige, Chloe and Pearl Langfield; Harper, Sloane and Bristol Langfield; Kaylee Cumbus and Tayvn Pari. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed.
Her family is grateful to all those who helped care for Erna, especially her nurse Melissa and aide Jessica of Sunset Hospice.
Erna’s funeral with visitation will be held on Wednesday , July 10, 2024, at 9:00AM from the Silva Funeral Home 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square), Taunton, with a Mass of Christian Burial for the repose of her soul at 11AM in St. Ann Church, 675 N. Main Street, Raynham. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, East Britannia Street, Taunton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts made to Sunset Hospice or the St.Vincent de Paul Society in Erna’s memory would be deeply appreciated.
