MARCO ISLAND, FL - Gordon A. "Red" Sylvia, husband of the late Marion (Maloney) Sylvia, left the salt life on March 12, 2009.
He was 85.
A resident of Marco Island, FL, he spent his summers in Point Independence, Onset, MA.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Manuel and Helena (Cabral) Sylvia.
Raised on the family farm in Taunton, the former Cabral's Dairy Farm, he graduated from the former Coyle High School in 1941.
Mr. Sylvia later attended Northeastern University before serving in the Merchant Marines.
A construction supervisor, he worked for the former J. L. Marshall & Sons of Pawtucket, RI, later moving to NH, where he worked for the Davidson Construction Co. of Manchester, NH.
During his professional years, he was involved in numerous building projects, the Wang Towers being his last formal project.
A licensed Captain, Mr. Sylvia was an avid mariner, and enjoyed the salt life, especially fishing and shell fishing.
He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 150 of Taunton and the VFW Post 8463 of Cape Coral, FL.
He will be remembered as an accomplished man.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Stacey A. Duggan and her husband John of Buzzards Bay, MA, Layne F. White of Manchester, NH and Kelsey J. Gendron of Chipley, FL; a sister, Gloria Paolella of White Plains, NY and Yarmouthport, MA; 6 grandchildren, Erin Wurlitzer, Jason S. Rudolph, Kristen Capone, Jessica M. Moniz, Katy Demers and Owen Taber; 4 great-grandchildren, Joshua Johnson; Hunter C. Moniz, Clare Wurlitzer, and Liya Capone; and several nieces and nephews.
His family will be receiving visitors at the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton, on Friday, March 20th, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
A funeral mass will follow at St. Mary's Church, Taunton at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at St. James Cemetery, E. Taunton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Evening Calling Hours are respectfully omitted.
