John A. Silva, Jr., 95, of South Daytona, FL, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
He was born to John and Carlota (Abreau) Silva on Feb. 4, 1914 in North Dighton, MA.
He served in the police reserve, then enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII.
Following his naval service, he worked as a police officer, and then opened his own grocery mart, "Silva Fine Foods" which he operated until he sold it in 1974.
He and his wife then retired to the Daytona Beach, FL area, where he worked at Publix and then at Sam's Club, where he loved his full time position as the greeter, making lots of friends and acquaintances.
In both Taunton and in Daytona Beach, he was a member of the VFW and the Elks Club and became a lifetime member of the Disabled American Vets (DAV) while residing in FL.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Mary Areias Silva and his daughter, Dorothea "Dottie" Silva Medeiros of Edgewater, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Joan Butler; his sister, Mary Varella; his son-in-law, John Medeiros, and his 2 grandchildren.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Friday, Oct. 23rd at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Nicholas of Myra Church, North Dighton at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the fuenral home on Thursday, Oct. 22nd, from 5 to 8 p.m.
