Jose G. Goncalo, age 74, of Taunton, passed away on February 22, 2023 at Morton Hospital.
He was the husband of Maria ( Pimental ) Goncalo.
Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, he was the son of the late Jose and Etelvira (Borges Macedo) Goncalo.
Jose was incredibly hard working. He was employed as a machine operator at Crown Wire for 16 years until owning his own donut shop where he baked the donuts and muffins every morning. He owned G’s Coffee and Donuts for 24 years with his wife until finally retiring.
When Jose wasn’t busy with the donut shop he was a renowned performer of the traditional portuguese music Desafio. He started performing when he was just nine years old and continued well into his sixties.
Everyone who knew Jose knew that there was no task too great that he could not achieve. Other hobbies included spending quality time with family and friends making delicious wine and singing songs for them.
Jose was known to express himself through poetry and song, reciting verses until the end, his last poem was spoken two days before passing. It read: “Uns dentro outros fora
para nao dar massada
eu estou aqui a tanta hora
e ninguem me diz nada”
Besides his beloved wife Maria of 49 years, he is survived by his children; Steve Goncalo and his wife Aileen, Milena Mendes and her husband Anthony, grandchildren; Aiden Mendes, Mia Mendes, Aila Goncalo, brother; Fernando Goncalo and his wife Delia, sisters; Maria dos Anjos Pimental and her husband Jose, Juvenalia Pereira and her husband Agostinho, Giselda Balanca and her husband Domingos, Virginia Goncalo and her partner Chris. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Goncalo’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 8:30 am from the Silva Funeral Home 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Saint Anthony Church, School Street, Taunton.
Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023 from 4 to 7 pm in the Silva Funeral Home.
