Joseph J. Dougherty, 81, of Berkley, MA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 1, 2024. Born and raised in Lynn, MA, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Macaione) Dougherty. A graduate of Lynn English High School, Brown University, and Boston University Law School, Joseph then proudly served almost two years in Vietnam, and earned the Army Commendation Medal.
A jack of many trades, in addition to practicing law out of his home office, Joseph was well-known in the greyhound racing community as owner and operator of the Pride of the Heather kennel. He also served as the President of the National Greyhound Association for several years, and led many efforts to enhance greyhound care as well as the greyhound adoption program. Joseph was known as an avid hockey player, beginning at age four on the ponds in Lynn all the way through his final year. Nicknamed “The Kid”, Joseph played on the Brown University team as well as the Boston University Club team, and continued playing competitively throughout his entire life. In his later years, he loved ice skating with his granddaughters, as well as playing golf and watching football with family and friends. The family is grateful for the wonderful care and support of his nurses and Mia Bock during his later days. Joseph will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and comedic nature, which brought laughter, joy, and comfort to those around him. Joseph is survived by his former wife Kathleen Dougherty and their four children, Patricia Dougherty, Edward Dougherty, Eleanor McNulty and Laura McMeniman. He is also survived by seven granddaughters: Kallie Fournier, Keltey Fournier, Keira Fournier, Sadie Dougherty, Amelia McNulty, Adalyn McNulty, and Annabelle McNulty. He is preceded in death by his brother John Dougherty and is survived by his sister Diane Brooks. Interment with US Army Honors will be privately held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. A private Celebration of Life will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts made to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund: https://www.fallenheroesfund.org/donate
in Joseph's memory would be deeply appreciated.
