Joseph “Joe” Martin, 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 6, 2021 with his loving family by his side.
Joseph was the beloved husband of Diane (Neville) Martin.
Mr. Martin was born on November 17, 1948, the son of the late Manuel and Dorothy (Victurine) Martin. He graduated Taunton High in 1966 and served in the Army Reserves.
Mr. Martin dedicated his life to education. He positively influenced thousands of students, families, and educators over the course of his career, serving as a teacher, director, and administrator in the Taunton school system. He taught Math and Computer Science at Taunton High School from 1970 – 1987, was Director of Technology from 1987 – 1993, and was the Assistant Superintendent for Administration & Finance from 1993 – 2006. He retired in 2006 after 35 years. He taught Mathematics at Bridgewater State University for over 40 years and he’s been member of the Taunton School Committee for the past 14 years.
In addition, Mr. Martin served for 14 years on the Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (TMLP) Commission, sat on the board of directors for the Taunton Nursing Home, was a member of the P.A.C.C., and was a member of the Taunton Lodge of Elks.
Mr. Martin created fantastic memories with family and friends throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling, caring for Bonsai trees, and collecting coins. He was a Patriots season ticket holder for over 25 years and loved tailgating and rooting for the Pats. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren, cheering them on at numerous sporting events and activities.
Besides his beloved wife Diane of over 50 years, Mr. Martin is survived by his children Sgt. Jeffrey Martin (TPD) and former wife Heather Young (Martin), Christine Strawbridge and her husband Jesse, grandchildren Alexi, Courtney, Sydney, Ryan and Nev, sister Mary (Martin) Moitoso and, siblings-in-law Ronald and Rosemary Bettencourt and Edward and Carolyn Pearson, all of Taunton, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother-in-law John Moitoso.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021 from 3 to 7pm in the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton. Additional parking with handicap access is located on the North side of the Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 10 AM in Annunciation of the Lord Church, 31 First Street in Taunton. (Relatives and friends may meet directly at church for 9:45 AM) Interment will follow in Saint Francis Cemetery Glebe Street, Taunton.
