Joseph A. “Jay” Bettencourt, Jr., age 60 of Taunton, passed away on Friday evening, March 14, 2025 at Miriam Hospital with his loving wife and his precious children by his side.
Jay was the beloved husband of Kelly (Capelo) Bettencourt.
Born in Taunton, Jay was the son of Joseph A. Bettencourt, Sr. of Raynham and the late Catherine M. (Ross) Bettencourt.
Jay attended Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton where he graduated in 1982. Jay was a master mechanic of anything with a motor, he was employed with TWS Motors. Jay enjoyed many things, most of all spending time with his wife and kids, going to car shows, going to his kids various sports events, fishing with his son, relaxing on the couch with his cats, tinkering with cars in the garage, building race cars, drag racing at New England Dragway, meeting up with friends, sitting in a chair under a tree, going out for breakfast, grabbing an ice cream, getting pizza at Socrates in North Kingstown, RI, and spending time in Jamestown, RI.
Besides his beloved wife Kelly of over 30 years and his father Joseph A. Bettencourt of Raynham, he is survived by his loving children, Ryan Bettencourt and Madison Bettencourt both of Taunton, two sisters, Suzanne O’Brien and her husband Cathal O’Brien of Raynham, Mary Haynes of Mansfield, his brother Mark Bettencourt and his wife Kristen of Hingham. Jay also leaves behind his brother-in-laws Richard Capelo and his wife Nancy of Taunton, Tommy Capelo and his wife Grace of Acushnet, Carl Capelo of Taunton, his sister-in-law Karen Capelo-Zankul and her husband Sam Zankul of Dighton. Jay also leaves behind eight nephews and six nieces, Daniel, Brendan, Aidan and Maeve Bettencourt, Caroline and Owen Haynes, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Kyle and his wife Charis, and Brandon and his wife Brittany, Capelo, Keri-Ann Correia and her husband Andrew, and Rachel, Rebecca and Christian Zankul, and his mother-in-law Zelia Oddi. In addition to his great niece Evelyn and his great nephews Lincoln and Levi. He was the uncle of the late Amanda Kelly, who passed in 2006 and the son-in-law of the late Arthur Capelo who passed in 1998. Jay was also the father of his late twin baby girl Catherine Mary Bettencourt who passed in 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 10am in Saint Ann Church 675 North Main Street, Raynham. Relatives and friends may meet directly at church at 9:30am.
Interment will follow in the Saint Pius Section of Saint Joseph Cemetery in Taunton.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 21st from 4 to 7pm in the Chapel of the Silva Funeral Home 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton. Additional parking with handicap access is located on the North side of the Funeral Home.
