Lorraine (Medas) Almeida, 93, of Taunton, MA passed away at her home on June 7, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank "Coach" Almeida to whom she was married for 67 years. Born in Taunton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Irene (Bombardier) Medas. She was the sister of Eddie Medas and the late Ronnie Medas and Donna Fasolo. Lorraine was the mother of six children: Paula Almeida of Taunton, MA, Cheryl Almeida of Onset, MA, Sandra Almeida of Jacksonville, FL, Susan Thompson of Fayetteville, AR, Thomas Almeida of Taunton, MA, and Andrew Almeida of Milford, MA.
Lorraine was "Nana" to grandchildren: Mikaela, Raquel, Sean, Katherine, Matthew, Timothy and his wife Bridget, and great-grandson Ronan. She was "Aunt Lorraine" to many nieces and nephews. Lorraine was lovingly known as simply "Auntie" to her grandnieces Kelsey and Molly.
Lorraine was a dedicated secretary for many years at various Taunton organizations including: the United Way, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Taunton Boys' Club where she was known to give the occasional forgotten child a ride home at the end of the day. On the weekends, Lorraine faithfully supported her husband Frank by attending hundreds of the high school football games he coached for decades. Lorraine loved the beach. She rented a cottage for her family each summer in Mattapoisett where long, lazy days at the beach were followed by evening cookouts with extended family and friends and frequent trips to the local ice cream shop. In her retirement years, Lorraine and Frank motored cross country multiple times to visit their children and grandchildren in Texas and California. Lorraine enjoyed the beauty of nature and she and Frank visited many National Parks along the way. During these trips Lorraine kept a daily journal of their adventures. At home, Lorraine liked to solve the crossword puzzles in the local newspaper, especially when her children and grandchildren were visiting and would join in on the fun. Lorraine was an avid reader. Lorraine also liked to garden and each summer her deck was ablaze with color from her many potted plants. Lorraine was a true fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Celtics and, whether they were winning or losing, she remained loyal at all times. She knew the names and backgrounds of the players and was never pleased when one of her favorites was traded to another team. Although she had numerous interests, most important to Lorraine was spending time with her family. Lorraine attended Mass at Our Lady of La Salette and, even well into her 80s, she would get dressed up each Sunday and drive herself to the Shrine where she found the services comforting and the music joyful. Lorraine loved children and welcomed the neighborhood little ones into her home where she always had a stash of cookies and Popsicles for them. For many years after her own children were grown, and right up to age 93, whenever Lorraine was asked about the challenges of raising six very close in age children, she would simply reply, "That's when I was the happiest." Lorraine will be remembered as a kind, humble, gentle-natured lady who was also witty and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was dearly loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Services and burial will be held privately. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
