Maria (Silva) Almeida

Maria Leontina (Silva) Almeida, age 85 of Taunton, passed away on April 30, 2025 at her residence with her loving family by her side.

She was the beloved wife for over 50 years of the late Joao Almeida who passed in 2020.

Maria was born in Ginetes, Sao Miguel, Azores, the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Martins) Sousa.

Her,  husband and her son came to America for a better life in 1972 where they worked very hard for everything they had.

Before retiring, Mrs. Almeida was employed with the former Renny’s Curtain Factory and then later worked across the street from her home on Weir St at Haskins before her retirement in 2011.

She enjoyed having gatherings at her house, planning parties for every occasion & cooking food was her way of expressing her love for her family and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joys of her life & she shared a special bond and gave her love to all of them. Above all, she put God first. For many years Maria carried on the Holy Ghost tradition where friends and family would gather around and pray.

Maria is survived by her loving son Fernando Almeida and his wife Janet of Taunton, loving grandmother of Victoria Barreiro and husband Kevin and Christina Almeida, great-grandmother of Alexander Almeida Barreiro and Bria Christina Barreiro.

Maria was also the sister of Maria Delores Camara, late husband Joao Camara and sister of the late Pedro Martins late wife Margarida Martins & late Luiza Martins. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews who she cared deeply for.

Maria’s funeral with visitation will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 8 am from the Silva Funeral Home 80 Broadway (at Saint Mary’s Square) Taunton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in Annunciation of the Lord Church, Taunton.

Interment will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery.
