Neville T. Fernando, age 83 of Berkley, passed away at his residence on April 20, 2021 after battling liver cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Just like everything else in his life, Neville faced his prognosis of liver cancer with courage and positivity.
Neville was the beloved husband of Iranganie (Gunasekera) Fernando.
Born in Negombo, Sri Lanka, he was the son of the late Anthony and Alice (Fernando) Fernando. He was preceded by his adoring son, Ashwin Fernando.
Before retiring, Neville was employed with the Timberlane Regional School District in Plaistow, NH as a science teacher. Prior to immigrating to the United States, Neville and his wife settled in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where they had the first ever Sri Lankan wedding. There he was a teacher of science, a zoologist and later became principal of the first international school, the Greek Community School. Neville and his family immigrated to the United States over twenty-five years ago. He obtained his master’s degree from Cambridge College which afforded him the opportunity to continue his passion in teaching sciences here in America.
Neville enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and especially watching over his grandsons. In his free time, Neville enjoyed traveling with his family all over the world especially to his homeland of Sri Lanka. Some of his fondest memories were of the years he spent raising his family in Ethiopia. During this time, he was a staple in the community and was highly regarded for his enchanting personality. Mr. Fernando was a spiritual being well-versed in many religious scripts. He will be remembered for his captivating conversations and wealth of wisdom.
Besides his beloved wife Iranganie of over 50 years, Neville is survived by his loving son Ashan Fernando and his wife Megan, and his sweet daughter, Ashini “Vasthu” Fernando all of Berkley. He was also the doting grandfather to Aacen and Axel who were the lights of his life. He is survived by his siblings Neeta Fernando of Sri Lanka, Wickrema Fernando of the UK, Chandra Fernando of Italy, Swineetha Jacob of Pakistan, and Beatrice Wickramaratne of Saugus, MA. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from all over the globe.
