RAYNHAM - Richard J. Souza, 80, of Raynham and Washington, ME, died at his Raynham home while in the care of Hospice on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. He succumbed to colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
He worked in Taunton silver plants from the age of 16 and served in the Army-of-Occupation in Germany during the Korean War. He retired as a silver repairman from Reed and Barton in 1992.
A lover of wildlife and the outdoors, Mr. Souza spent his retirement enjoying time with his pet Doberman Pinchers in the log cabin he built in the Maine woods, vegetable gardening, and traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He especially cherished his trips to Alaska and Yellowstone.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Manuel V. and Mary (Thomas) Souza.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret (Borden), his son, David Souza, David's wife Jo, and their children, Anthony, James, and Melissa of Easton; his daughter, Ann Souza and her son Nicolas Colon of Marlboro; his brothers James Souza of Berkley, and Ronald Souza and his wife Nancy of Raynham; his sisters, Nancy Read and Elaine Souza of Taunton; his brother-in-law, Andrew Hollingsworth of Royal Palm, Florida, husband of his late sister, Elizabeth Hollingsworth; and his sisters-in-law, Joan Lewis of Seattle, WA, Patricia Corey of Taunton and Rosemary McDonald of Marlboro.
He is also survived by his much-loved aunt, Bella Gonsalves of Taunton; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a gathering to celebrate Richard's life at the home of Ronald Souza, 20 King Philip St., Raynham beginning at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 5, 2010.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St. Watertown, MA 02472.
