Shirley (Patros) Hoey

d. September 18, 2020

Shirley A. Hoey (Patros), of East Taunton and Raynham, MA passed away of natural causes on September 18, 2020, at the age of 90, surrounded by family.

Born Shirley Ann Patros, February 9, 1930, loving daughter of Henry and Doris (Mitchell) Patros of East Taunton. She attended Taunton High School and was graduated from Lesley College class of 1952. She was a longtime elementary teacher in both Berkley and Raynham school systems, as well as teaching in Virginia while her late husband, David Robert Hoey, was stationed there with the US Navy. She retired from the Raynham system in 1990 after inspiring and nurturing the lives of countless children.

A life-long Catholic, she was active in the Holy Family Church Choir of East Taunton. Shirley loved life and was a member of the Red Hatter Social Group and the YMCA. She loved dancing most especially to Polkas. She also loved Autumn drives to see the change of the seasons and enjoyed trips to the coast at any time of the year in search of a good lobster roll.

Shirley’s travels took her from the mountains of Canada by rail; to Ireland and England; dog sledding in Alaska; rafting down a river; cruising in Italy and Greece; flying in a helicopter through the Grand Canyon; and (although she could not swim) a submarine trip in Hawaii.  Shirley loved the excitement and adventure in living and saw the good in everything and everyone, and passed this along inspiring her family to see the beauty in life. Her kind and gentle spirit will be greatly missed but lives on in all of us.

Shirley is survived by her son David Henry Hoey and his wife Mary of Shrewsbury, MA, and her daughter Sheryl Ann Hoey of Falmouth, MA, as well as seven grandchildren: David and wife Bridget; Jennifer; Kyle and wife Sarah; Corrine; Tom and wife Jenna; Dan and wife Evelyn; Elizabeth and husband Raul. Her legacy also includes six great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at Holy Family Church, East Taunton. The family respectfully requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations in Shirley’s name be made to St. Jude Hospital.

Arrangements are with the Silva Funeral Home of Taunton.
