TAUNTON - Walter A. Biss, husband of Mildred F. (Curtis) Biss of Taunton and the late Cynthia (Blood) Biss, died at Island Terrace Nursing Home in Lakeville on Jan. 19, 2012.
He was 88.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Michael and Julia (Goscaminski) Biss.
Raised and educated in Taunton, Mr. Biss was a 1941 graduate of Taunton High School.
He later served in the U.S. Army during WW II in the 758th Railway Shop Battalion in Dibraugarh, India.
Owner and former operator of Taunton's Biss Lumber Company, Mr. Biss founded the company in 1947.
He is a life member of the International Order of Hoo-Hoo, a Lumbermen's Association.
He also was past-treasurer of the Churchill Shores Association, the Roger Williams Hoo-Hoo Club and of the China Burma India Veterans Organization.
A lifelong resident of Taunton, Mr. Biss spent summers at Long Pond in Lakeville.
In his spare time enjoyed collecting stamps, watch fobs; and Taunton area postcards and memorabilia. He was a member of the Charles H. Titus Masonic Lodge and Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the church's building committee.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons, William A. Biss of Dighton, Wayne A. Biss of Raynham and Warren A. Biss and his wife Deidre Fountain of Lakeville; a sister, Helen Carpenter of Raynham; four grandchildren; a niece and a nephew. Calling Hours will be held at Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton Monday, Jan. 23rd from 5 to 8 p.m.

Following cremation, his ashes will be interred at the MA National VA Cemetery in Bourne.
