William Armond "Poppy" Gallagher, a devoted family patriarch and respected member of his community, passed away peacefully at the age of 97, surrounded by loved ones. His life was defined by honor, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to those he cherished.
Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1928 to William F. Gallagher and Antoinette Gallagher (Belise), he was predeceased by his first and second wives, Theresa Gallagher (Pereira) and Deborah S. Gallagher (Sheppard). He was the proud father of Cheryl A. Christiansen, William J. Gallagher, Joy T. Sanfacon, Lisa H. Kaminski (David), Joan A. Bullock (predeceased), Patricia E. Gallagher (Jose), and Mark J. Hampston.
A proud veteran, Bill served his country with distinction. He was a Korean War veteran, an Army Reservist for 13 years, and a Navy Reservist for 17 years. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer, honored with a ceremony aboard the USS Massachusetts. His dedication to service was a cornerstone of his life.
Beyond his military career, Bill was a master dental technician who worked in the family dental lab before serving as a corrections officer and supervisor at Bridgewater State Prison. His work ethic and integrity earned him respect in every role he held.
He proudly raised his family in Assonet, Massachusetts. Later, during a retirement that spanned nearly four decades, Bill embraced life fully. He enjoyed golf, bowling, and trips to Disney World. He spent years in Naples, Florida, and later moved to Kodak, Tennessee, where he loved the peace of the countryside with his loyal dog, Dodger. In 2015, he returned to Massachusetts, and in his later years enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Tennessee Vols. Remarkably, he lived independently until his final days.
Poppy lived a life many aspire to; one of service, love, and unwavering strength. He will be deeply missed as the patriarch of his family, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved him.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish his memory.
A celebration of life will be private.
"He walked with honor every day."
